Objective of the Establishment

The aging society is exerting financial pressure on healthcare forcing a review of the entire concept from its very foundation. The government has taken various measures, such as separating medicine and pharmaceuticals, and reducing the cost of synthetic drugs in an effort to rein in the cost of medical care. Despite such efforts, benefits to the public have not followed. Indeed, medical costs have continued to escalate, and the number of medications with strong side effects is on the increase.
A new concept in comprehensive healthcare has been promoted by the staff in charge of advanced medical treatment in the Research and Development Division, Health Policy Bureau, the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare. Originating in the U.S.A., comprehensive healthcare is a blend of western and traditional medicine that seeks methods of treatment best suited to individual patients. This concept aims to improve efficiency and, through the easing of regulations, give individuals the freedom to choose alternative healthcare and treatments not covered by national health insurance. Such a choice, it is thought, will reduce the nation’s healthcare costs by increasing the number of individuals seeking private-pay options.
The term comprehensive healthcare should carry significant meaning. Yet, its true meaning, content and objectives are superficial, giving us the feeling that the term is inappropriate. To better describe our commitment to providing the highest level of individualized care, we change the name of our foundation from (General Incorporated Foundation) International Comprehensive Medicine Foundation to (General Incorporated Foundation) Personalized Medicine Promotion Foundation.
Personalized health care is sometimes referred to as tailor-made or made-to-order medicine, providing healthcare best suited to each individual’s personality, body, medical history, and cause and symptoms of current condition. Rather than providing “One-size-fits-all” care, we treat each patient separately by developing treatment plans that address individual needs.
To deliver personalize healthcare we obtain detailed information on each individual through, for example human genome DNA analysis, a method that has seen rapid development in recent years. Yet, no matter how much human genome DNA analysis technology may advance, it can never provide all the information required to treat the patient. While genes are the major determiners of development, their expression is influenced greatly be the environment, personal habits and care. Identical twins come from a single cell dividing and growing to create two bodies born at the same time and containing identical genetic information. However, this does not mean that their lives will be identical. Their medical histories and the rate of aging may differ greatly.
While everyone wants to lead a happy and healthy life, our well-being is influenced by complex factors, such as the environment, personal habit, relationships and stress. Fulfillment of the wish to live happily and healthily is the most important factor in human life.
Under the management of the Foundation for the Personalized Medicine Promotion Foundation, Asclepeion focuses on human genome DNA analysis with respect to ethics, and the spirit of reconciliation with nature. We see our patients sterically, with a focus on treatment and preventive medicine as well as health maintenance and improvement programs best suited to the individual patient. Our objective is to provide truly personalized medical and healthcare that enables a healthy, happy and stress-free life.
Asclepeion: Personalized Medical and Healthcare Facility is not a hospital. Our policy is not to give treatment after illness develops, but to provide preventive measures that maintain and improve health. Providing treatment after disease develops is like repairing a car after it crashes. It is more important not to crash. Human genome DNA analysis, too, is better used for prevention than treatment.
In this day and age, hospitals find it extremely difficult to practice preventive medicine by, for example, prescribing preventive drugs, improving lifestyle habits and managing the psychological environment. By all rights, hospitals should put more weigh on prevention than on treatment. If this were possible, today’s healthcare environment would be different. Unfortunately, however, it is no longer realistic to expect this from hospitals.
Our foundation and Asclepeion wish to spread the concept of personalized medical and healthcare at the private level in a direction that will effectively reduce healthcare costs for the national government and increase the efficiency of medical institutions. Our goal is to serve as a pioneer in uniting doctors and the community to make the world a better place for everyone.
